Which Food Types To Choose When Eating For Good Heart Health
Before choosing the right food types to help keep our heart healthy and in good condition,
it is essential we understand why our heart develops diseases in the first place and
what we should be doing to minimize risks.
With age, stress and bad eating habits the blood vessels that flow to and from the
heart form a layer of plaque due to the build-up of cholesterol. This layer restricts
the passage of blood through the artery to the heart, which in turn supplies less
oxygenated blood our heart needs to keep healthy and in working order.
At times, this layer of plaque may rupture, forming a blood clot that can
actually block the blood’s passage setting off a heart attack.
We can do a great deal to help our heart keep healthy and in excellent working condition
by exercising regularly, keeping our blood pressure and cholesterol levels low and
stopping smoking. Choosing the right food types will reduce the levels of cholesterol
in our blood, lowering the risk of heart disease, resulting in a younger and stronger heart.
You can start the day with oats, whole-wheat cereal or bread; they are rich in beta glucan,
which will lower the level of LDL cholesterol. These food types also contain omega-3 fatty
acids, potassium and vitamin B9; nutrients that will help keep our arteries clean.
You may add slices of apple or berry fruits that have plenty of fiber, vitamins as
well as flavonoids, which help strengthen the artery walls and are potent antioxidants.
Apples also have anti-inflammatory properties that will prevent blood clots.
For your main meals eat plenty of vegetables, especially the darker and leafy type,
also rich in flavonoids and vitamin A. In general all darker coloured vegetables that
grow above the ground are healthy for the heart.
When choosing your proteins opt for meat with lower levels of saturated fats, such as
poultry meat. Fish is always the best choice, for it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids
and very low in cholesterol. Cold-water fishes such as salmon, herring and mackerel
will lower the level or triglycerides that cause heart attacks. You do not have to
eat animal meat for protein; you can find this nutrient in soybeans, lentils,
beans, rice and low-fat dairy products, also high in fiber and rich in minerals.
When preparing your meals steam or grill your food, and season with olive oil,
which will also contribute in lowering your cholesterol levels. Do not use butter
and avoid frying any food, for it is no use eating healthy food if you are going to
saturate it with fatty oils. If you include these food types in your daily diet and
reduce the consumption of red meat, saturated fats, sugar and alcoholic beverages
your heart will keep healthy and strong for many years to come.
